Cindy LaCrosse Earns First Tour Victory In Mexico

Press release from the Duramed Futures Tour

NUEVO VALLARTA, NAYARIT, MEXICO, March 28, 2010 - A year ago this time, Cindy LaCrosse was taking her final swings as a collegiate player at the University of Louisville and dreaming about her life as a pro. Today, the Floridian carded a bogey-free round of 5-under 68 to win her first title on the Duramed FUTURES Tour at the $150,000 Riviera Nayarit Challenge.

LaCrosse posted rounds of 70-71-68 to win at 10-under 209, one shot better than Jennie Lee (72) of Henderson, Nevada at 210 (-9), and two strokes ahead of rookie Chelsea Curtis (69) of New Seabury, Massachusetts, at 8-under 211 in the Tour's second tournament of the season and its first full-field international event.

"It feels amazing," said LaCrosse, 22, of Tampa, Florida, who charged from three shots back to catch Lee. "Last year, I came out of college and got into contention a few times, but just couldn't get the last round right. What feels great today is to get into contention and to finally close with a good round."

For most of today's final round on the 6,433-yard El Tigre Golf & Country Club, Lee, a former Duke University All-American, held at least a two-shot lead and appeared to be building momentum at the nine-hole turn. Lee rolled in a 10 footer for birdie on the third hole, and added another birdie on No. 7 to lead LaCrosse by three shots.

But playing two groups ahead was Curtis, the hard-charging first-year pro out of Georgetown University, who carded birdies on holes 4, 5, 6, and 9, and then cut Lee's lead to only one shot with another birdie on hole No. 10. Curtis took advantage of the par-73 course's longer holes, making birdie on the first four par-five holes.

"The par-5s are where it's at on this course," said Curtis, 22, who hit 14 greens in regulation today. "It's all about your drives and wedge shots."

The rookie had three birdie chances on the back nine, but could not get her putts to fall. On the 18th, her approach sailed into the right greenside bunker, and then rolled 15 feet past the cup on her shot from the sand. Curtis took bogey, but knew going into the final hole that she had to give it a rip if she wanted to try to catch the leader.

"I had a feeling that 10 under would be the number to beat and I knew, at one point, that I was tied for the lead," said Curtis, a two-time winner at Georgetown. "I'm not here to come in second, so I went for the pin on 18, and just didn't get it."

The back nine came down to a duel between LaCrosse and Lee, playing in the same pairing. Lee had put together identical bogey-free rounds of 69 in the first two days and entered today's final round feeling no letup.

"I peeked at the scoreboard on No. 9 and just told myself to keep doing what I was doing," said Lee, 23, a former U.S. Curtis Cup Team member. "I also thought about playing more conservatively on the back nine because the wind was picking up and there's more water back there."

Lee stiffed her approach shot to two feet on the 10th hole for birdie and moved to a two-stroke lead over LaCrosse. But then she gave back two shots with bogeys on holes 11 and 12 to drop into a three-way tie with Curtis and LaCrosse at 9 under after LaCrosse rolled in birdies from eight feet and 20 feet on holes 14 and 15, respectively.

LaCrosse was picking up speed and Lee was starting to wobble late in the round. But the turning point for the Florida pro came on No. 16, a hole that had proved to be her nemesis all week. On Friday, LaCrosse had double-bogeyed the 16th, and on Saturday, she posted a bogey. To keep her tee shot in play today, she opted for a hybrid club. Her tee shot landed in a small ditch in the fairway and LaCrosse watched in dismay as her approach shot once again sailed over the green, landing in a back bunker. It was a treacherous lie from the sand to a downhill green bordered by water, but LaCrosse stepped up and hit it to one foot to save par.

"It was the bunker shot of my life," she said.

When Lee three-putted from 30 feet on the 17th for bogey, the door again swung open for LaCrosse. This time, all she had to do was walk through it to win.

"I was trying to get my hands and arms to stop shaking, and my heart was beating out of my chest," said LaCrosse, a rookie 2010 LPGA Tour member who two-putted for par and the win. "It's good to know what it feels like to win out here. It's good to know I've accomplished what I've been thinking about doing."

And as her friends doused the quiet player with champagne on the 18th green in the tropical sunshine of this coastal Mexican paradise, LaCrosse hugged her fellow contestants, picked up her golf bag crowned by her Louisville Cardinals head cover and headed to the scoring tent to sign the scorecard for her first win on the developmental tour. In less than a year, a dream had come true.

Angela Oh Wins Rain-Shortened Event After One-Hole Play-off

With rain blowing sideways, fairways flooding and palm trees showing their wind-dancing resilience in Florida storm conditions, players hunkered inside the clubhouse at Lake Region Yacht and Country Club, wondering how Sunday’s final round of the $100,000 Florida’s Natural Charity Classic would play out.
In a word, it was a wash. Sunday’s final round was suspended at 1:23 p.m., and at 4 p.m., the final round was cancelled.
After 36 holes on Saturday, two players, Angela Oh and rookie Jane Rah, were tied for the lead at 7-under 137. Once the lashing rains left the area on Sunday afternoon, leaving a waterlogged and largely unplayable course behind, Duramed Futures Tour officials shortened the event to a 36-hole tournament with a sudden-death play-off between the two players who were tied.
The play-off hole was to have been No. 18, but this hole, bordered by Lake Hamilton, was unplayable because of standing water. So Oh and Rah were moved to the 154yd par-3 17th hole to play for the win.
Rah won the coin toss and played first, hitting her 6-iron to 25 feet below the hole. She two-putted for par.
Oh stood on the tee, trying to decide between a “hard 6-iron or a choked-down 5-iron” when wind began blowing in her face. She opted for the 5-iron and her shot landed one foot past the cup and rolled to four feet. She drained the putt for birdie to win her first professional tournament.
“It ended as quickly as it started,” said Oh, 21, of Maple Shade, N.J., winning the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic in the one-hole playoff. “But it also felt like the longest hole ever.”
And it was one long afternoon once the rain began hammering the course. At the time of the suspension, three players -- Rah, Gerina Mendoza of Roswell, N.M., and Garrett Phillips of St. Simons Island, Ga. -- were tied for the final-round lead at eight under, with Cindy LaCrosse of Tampa, Fla., one shot back at seven under. On the other hand, Oh was struggling four shots off the lead with a double-bogey, one birdie and one bogey.
“I was on the 11th green about to putt when they suspended play,” said Oh, who played for two years at the University of Tennessee. “I was three over at that point.”
“I had a 10-foot birdie chance on the 11th green when they called it,” said Rah, 19, of Torrance, Calif. “It was one of those days when I was in between clubs all day, but I was kind of hanging around, with one birdie and pars everywhere else.”
Rah’s chance to close out her first professional win ended when the round was washed out.
Tournament officials were pressed not only with a aturated golf course, but also with a daylight constraint and 59 players still on the course.
When play was called, Oh was fading and Mendoza and Phillips, also chasing their first Tour title, were in hot pursuit of Rah, with LaCrosse right on their heels.
“We had eight holes left, but that’s golf,” said LaCrosse, a second-year pro out of the University of Louisville who is an LPGA Tour member this year. “You can’t be too disappointed about it. There’s just too much water out there.”
“It is what it is,” added Phillips, also a second-year pro out of the University of Georgia. “If we didn’t have to travel to Mexico tomorrow, maybe we could have played on Monday.”
Mendoza had just eagled the 11th hole to jump into a share of the lead and was on the 12th green when play was suspended, but as the rains pounded against the clubhouse windows for more than two hours, Mendoza slept soundly on a couch in a players’ area, waking up to be told that her work for the day was done.
Neither Oh nor Rah, who last played together in junior golf five years ago, had ever competed in a play-off to win.
“I had a putt-off once, but that was in junior golf when I was like 10 or 11 years old,” said Rah, making her pro debut on the Futures Tour this week following her departure from Oklahoma State University after one semester.
But Oh, who carded a second-round score of 7-under 65 to put herself into position on Saturday, was in the right place at the right time today, making her birdie when she needed it to pocket the winner’s $14,000 check and walk away with a new Bulova watch and Med/3 skin care products.
“It feels awesome,” said Oh, who was a 2009 LPGA Tour member. “I haven’t played on a course in three months because it’s been cold in New Jersey, so just being able to hit shots on grass and get that feeling back has been great.
“But if I can do it once, hopefully more will come,” added Oh. “I’m looking forward to Mexico next week.”

Oh, Rah Lead Futures Tour’s Season
Opener After Two Rounds in Florida

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
WINTER HAVEN, Florida. – It was “moving day” on Saturday in the second round of the $100,000 Florida’s Natural Charity Classic, so Angela Oh and rookie Jane Rah took advantage of perfect weather and made their respective jumps up the leaderboard.
Oh picked the day to card her career-low round of 7-under 65 to take the lead at 137 (-7). Four groups later, she was joined by rookie Rah, who moved into a share of the lead with her second-day score of 5-under 67.
But by day’s end and heading into Sunday’s final round at Lake Region Yacht and Country Club, six players were jammed within four shots of the lead in the Duramed FUTURES Tour’s season-opening event.
“Being from New Jersey, I haven’t been on a course for three months,” said Oh, 21, a third-year pro from Maple Shade, N.J. “I’ve been all bundled up all winter, hitting balls on the range and pretty much putting on the carpet, so coming into this week, I just wanted to make the top-10 here and in the next tournament.”
Oh’s irons were red hot today. She hit 16 greens in regulation, setting up a bogey-free day that rendered 27 putts, five birdies and an eagle-3 on the par-5 18th hole. Her second shot on the last hole landed in a “bowl” indention around a sprinkler head in the 18th fairway. Oh fretted momentarily about the shot that needed to clear a water hazard in front of the 18th green. But still riding the momentum that had carried her all day, the 2009 LPGA Tour member pulled out her 50-degree A-wedge, struck her approach shot to five inches of the cup and watched it spin back into the hole for the eagle.
“My irons were awesome,” said Oh, who played collegiately for two years at the University of Tennessee. “I think this is the best I have ever played.”
Competing in her first Duramed FUTURES Tour tournament as a pro this week, Rah added another sub-par round to her scorecard and found herself slipping into match-play mode with pairings partner Garrett Phillips (69) of St. Simons Island, Ga., who was also pushing her way up the leaderboard for a share of fourth at 5-under 139 with Gerina Mendoza (67) of Roswell, N.M.
“Garrett inspired me and I almost felt like it was match-play,” said Rah, 19, of Torrance, Calif. “On a couple of holes, she unleashed it off the tee and I couldn’t really catch her, but on the greens, I rolled a couple in on top of hers. It felt pretty good.”
The rookie’s hot streak included four birdies on holes No. 9-14, and she capped off her single-bogey round with a 12-foot birdie on the 18th to charge into a share of the lead with Oh.
“My goal is to just keep knocking and if I win, I win,” said Rah, who played college golf last fall at Oklahoma State University. “I’d like to get top-10s every week, like Inbee [Park], and to consistently shoot under par.”
But Oh and Rah are trailed one shot back by second-year pro Cindy LaCrosse of Tampa, Fla., who has paired rounds of 69-69 to sit one shot off the lead at 6-under 138. LaCrosse won two Florida mini-tour tournaments last fall and has been building confidence ever since she graduated from the University of Louisville last spring, posted five top-10 finishes in 11 Duramed FUTURES Tour events in 2009, and earned 2010 LPGA Tour membership at LPGA Q-School last December.
“I’m happy with the way I played because I’m more consistent with where I am, my scores and the mental part of my game than I was last year,” said LaCrosse, 22, who hit 13 greens and 11 fairways in regulation today. “I’m still in it and I’m happy with where I am.”
Mendoza capitalized on her length off the tee on the par-72, 6,176-yard course. She birdied every par-5 hole on the course, playing the longer holes at five under today, compared to playing the par fives at one over in Friday’s first round. Mendoza carded six birdies and one bogey today, knocking her wedges close and needing only 25 putts to move from a tie for 20th into a tie for fourth.
“For me, it’s all about confidence,” said Mendoza, 24, who also has 2010 LPGA membership. “Coaches tell me there’s nothing wrong with my swing, so if it’s not my swing, obviously, it’s something in my head. I do believe in myself a lot more.”
Dewi Claire Schreefel of Diepenveen, Netherlands, also made a huge move with her second-round score of 6-under 66 to charge from a tie for 62nd into a tie for seventh at 3-under 141 alongside Esther Choe (68) of Scottsdale, Ariz., and one stroke behind Jenny Gleason (71) of Clearwater, Fla., at 4-under 140. Schreefel carded six birdies in her bogey-free round, with five birdies on hole Nos. 6-11.
“I tried to play safe and not make too many mistakes, and then I got things going,” said Schreefel, a second-year pro who won the Tour’s 2009 ING New England Golf Classic in Connecticut. “If I feel good and am hitting it well, I can get my groove going.”
Choe hit 14 greens in regulation and said she tried to hit to the middle of greens and make two-putts or better all day. That strategy worked, with Choe’s longest birdie putt being a 30-footer on No. 8.

“This is my best round in competition for a while,” said Choe, 20, the 2006 AJGA Rolex Girls’ Player of the Year and a two-time U.S. Junior Solheim Cup Team member.
Rookie Kendall Dye of Edmond, Okla., had the gutsiest round of the day, improving her opening-day score of 79 by 10 shots with today’s second-round score of 69 to jump from a tie from 122nd into a tie for 50th at 4-over 148.
“This is my first Duramed FUTURES Tour event and I had some nerves and jittery feelings yesterday,” said Dye, a 2009 graduate of the University of Oklahoma, where she was the captain of the women’s golf team. “I guess today’s score is kind of night and day with yesterday.”
Former England amateur international Rachel Connor, pictured above, daughter of Manchester Golf Club's Scottish-born professional, survived the cut on her debut on the Futures Tour.
A total of 22 players carded rounds of even-par 144 or better.
Eighty-one players made the 36-hole cut at 150 (+6).
Weather: Sunny with temperatures in the high-70s.

Four Share Futures Tour Lead At Florida’s

Natural Charity Classic

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
WINTER HAVEN, Florida: The first round of the Duramed FUTURES Tour’s season opener ended with four players tied for the lead at 3-under 69 in the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic.
Jenny Gleason of Clearwater, Fla., moved to the top of the leaderboard in the second annual $100,000 tournament at Lake Region Yacht and Country Club, but by sunset, she shared the lead with Hannah Yun of Bradenton, Fla., Cindy LaCrosse of Tampa, Fla., and Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ontario.
“You get some good lies and you get some bad lies,” said Gleason, a two-time winner on the Tour who needed only 27 putts. “I hope everybody took their patience pill today. I’m from Central Florida and I know all of the courses are struggling after the winter we’ve had.”
Central Florida has suffered with unusually cold temperatures for the last two months, affecting golf course agronomy. The region also was smacked by heavy rainfall less than a week ago, resulting in thinner-than-usual grass growth and muddy accumulation on golf balls landing in thin lies.
But 144 players kicking off the Futures Tour year were greeted by perfect sunny weather. Like Gleason, Yun said she tried to stay patient and calm. That strategy worked early when she birdied the first two holes from 10 feet and 12 feet, respectively, and then added two more birdies to one bogey.
“I shot a 69 here last year in the first round, but I feel different and more mature in my game,” said Yun, who turns 18 in April. “I’m learning how to play as a pro now and how one shot really does make a difference.”
Playing in her first full season this year, LaCrosse, who has 2010 LPGA status, was steady all day, hitting 16 greens in regulation and missing only one fairway. Unlike many other players in the field who are still trying to adjust to new clubs to meet the U.S. Golf Association’s new conforming grooves regulations, LaCrosse was striping her new clubs in a round that produced two birdies, one bogey and a holed-out eagle on the par-5 ninth hole in which she drained an 84-yard 54-degree wedge shot.
“I played in 11 events out here last year after I graduated,” said LaCrosse, a former All-American at the University of Louisville. “This year, I will definitely be more goal-oriented to see what I can do.”
Playing in the last group of the day, Shepley outraced the sunset and grabbed a share of the lead. Like the other Florida residents deadlocked for first, Shepley, who is commuting from her home in Orlando this week, wanted to get off to a good start. For the Canadian, it started on the first hole when she three-putted for bogey off the fringe.
“I told myself then that I had a choice to let it go or let this be the start of a long season,” said Shepley, who hit 15 greens in regulation and carded four birdies and one bogey in today’s opening round. “I was a big girl and turned it into a good round.”
Five players are tied one shot back at 2-under 70 after the first round, including Lauren Doughtie of Suffolk, Va., who was in the first 8:15 a.m. pairing with Erica Moston of Belmont, Calif., and Lili Alvarez of Durango, Mexico, who had special guest LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan serving as her caddie.
“I had butterflies this morning, but not necessarily because of the commissioner,” said Doughtie, a second-year professional who played collegiately at North Carolina State University. “I tried to think he was a normal guy out there and we were just out having fun.”
Doughtie is deadlocked at 70 with rookie Victoria Elizabeth of Orlando, Fla., rookie Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., 2010 LPGA Tour member Nicole Jeray of Berwyn, Ill., and second-year pro Garrett Phillips of St. Simons Island, Georgia.
There was a different tone in the atmosphere this morning for the tee-off to the 2010 season on the Duramed Futures Tour. With the arrival of LPGA Commissioner Whan came a plethora of LPGA staff members, the Golf Channel and one national weekly golf magazine.
At least a couple of former Tour members also wandered onto the course to see friends and check out the Tour. Former Tour member and Florida Gator Jeanne Cho-Hunicke drove over from Orlando to watch current player Virada Nirapathpongporn of Bangkok, Thailand, while 2006 Duramed Futures Tour Player of the Year Song-Hee Kim of South Korea, now an LPGA Tour member who is world-ranked No. 14, showed up to see her friends and to check out the tour where she got her start.
“It looks good,” said Kim, sweeping her hand at the tournament grounds. “Bigger, better, really good.”
A total of 19 players carded rounds under par with 34 players finishing at even-par 72 or better.
Weather: Sunny with temperatures in the mid-70s and a slight breeze.

US Futures Tour goes south of the Border down Mexico way

NEWS RELEASE
The LPGA's developmental tour, the Duramed Futures Tour, and Carri Sports Marketing S.A. de C.V., announced today the inaugural Mexico Classic, to be held March 22-28, at El Tigre Golf and Country Club in Riviera Nayarit, Mexico. The 54-hole tournament marks the first international full-field event in the Futures Tour's 30-year history.
"We are very pleased for the first time to be able to showcase our very talented players outside the United States," said Zayra F. Calderon, CEO of the Duramed Futures Tour. "As the Tour continues to flourish, Mexico is a great platform to extend our reach and provide the citizens of Mexico the chance to see the LPGA stars of tomorrow and some of their own professionals compete for the largest purse on Tour."
"I'm very excited to see that golf is growing a lot in Mexico with more tournaments," said Lorena Ochoa, Duramed Futures Tour's 2002 Player of the Year, who earned her LPGA membership through the developmental tour. "To have a Duramed Futures Tour tournament in our country is very special. I want to say congratulations and help welcome the players to Mexico."
The $150,000 tournament will feature a field of 144-players, including special invitees from Mexico. El Tigre golf course is a par-72 course, designed by Robert Von Hagge and Rick Berril. The course, which opened in March 2002, has previously hosted the Copa de las Americas, and the Canadian Tour.
The Mexico Classic marks a five-year agreement between the Duramed Futures Tour and Carri Sports Marketing. Carri Sports Marketing manages more than 33 amateur and professional sporting events across Mexico. Carri Sports Marketing also assisted with the Nationwide Tour's 2009 Mexico Open.
"We are very pleased to be part of bringing the Duramed Futures Tour to Mexico for the first time," said Hugo Rivero Laing, President of Carri Sports Marketing. "With this joint effort between the Tour, El Tigre Golf and Country Club, our sponsors, and the government of Nayarit, Mexico, we look to stimulate women's golf in Mexico and present an enormous opportunity for Mexican players to compete alongside the Tour's great players."
The top Mexican-born finisher in the event, whether a Duramed FuturesTour member or a special invitee, will receive a special exemption to compete in the LPGA's tournament held at Tres Marias Golf Club in Morelia, Mexico in 2010.
The full 2010 Duramed Futures Tour schedule will be announced in December.
